LYNDONVILLE — Police reported that a homeless man who spends his time in St. Johnsbury was found on Tuesday driving one of two vehicles stolen from a St. Johnsbury business, and attached to the car was a license plate that is registered to the other stolen vehicle. Joseph Greenwood, 46, was arrested in the parking lot of Union Bank on Depot Street after trying to flee police on foot and resisting arrest, Lyndonville Officer Robert Gerrish reported. Police had responded to a complaint of a suspicious Honda Civic parked in the Veterans of Foreign Wars parking lot on Hill Street in Lyndonville. A check of the license plate indicated it belonged on a vehicle reported stolen. Vermont State Police had been investigating two vehicles stolen in St. Johnsbury early Monday. They had reported the same individual was suspected of stealing a Honda Civic and Lexus. The Honda was taken from the St. Johnsbury Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership on Memorial Drive, and the Lexus was stolen from Wes Ward Auto on Portland Street. Lyndonville police said Greenwood was driving the Civic, and the license plate on it belongs to the stolen Lexus. The report from Officer Gerrish notes that Greenwood drove away when the police car arrived and didn’t stop until reaching Carpet Connection at 199 Depot St.
