Authorities say the cab of a tanker hauling gasoline burst into flames

WINHALL, Vt. (WCAX) – Authorities say the cab of a tanker hauling gasoline burst into flames Friday morning in Winhall. It happened around 9:45 a.m. on Route 11 near the Bromley Ski Area. Fire officials say the driver saw smoke and pulled over. They say no one was hurt and that the fire did not spread to the 8,000-gallon tanker. Winhall fire officials say they were able to douse the flames before they spread. “Something happened in the engine compartment, driver heard something, smelled smoke. looked outside his window — flames. He pulled over, locked his brakes up and jumped out and it was all over from there,” said Winhall Fire Safety Officer Stuart Coleman. “We could have had a major catastrophe here.” Traffic on the road was reduced to one lane. The tanker was operated by Abenaqui Carriers out of New Hampshire. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
