Hundreds of law enforcement officers escorted a fallen Border Patrol agent

Hundreds of law enforcement officers escorted a fallen Border Patrol agent through Burlington on Thursday for Agent David Maland. Thursday morning, law enforcement officers from around the state joined the procession to escort the hearse carrying Maland from the UVM Medical Center morgue to a Burlington funeral home. Maland was killed Monday during a traffic stop on Interstate 91 in Coventry. While Maland lived in Newport, he grew up in the Midwest. The investigation into the shooting is now led by the FBI. Maland is believed to be the first federal law enforcement officer to be killed in the line of duty in Vermont since the prohibition era. Maland served with the Border Patrol for about a decade. Maland, who was hit in the neck during the shootout, was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was assigned to the Pentagon during the 9/11 attack.
