A Tax Cap Question Heads to the Ballot

White Mountains Regional School District Superintendent Rob Scott says the district plans to help voters understand a new school property tax cap question that will appear on the November ballot. Gov. Kelly Ayotte signed House Bill 1300 into law in July. The law requires the question to appear on every municipality’s Nov. 3 general election ballot, according to the New Hampshire Bulletin. If at least 60% of voters across a school district approve the measure, the cap would last two years. It would allow property tax increases tied to inflation and growth in taxable property but limit other increases in the amount raised for the school district, the Bulletin reported. The law also limits certain administrative expenses to 6% of a school district’s overall budget if a cap is approved.
