A man allegedly scammed three banks in the Northeast Kingdom for thousands of dollars

A man allegedly scammed three banks in the Northeast Kingdom for thousands of dollars using fake identification. Several other banks across Vermont were also scammed. The alleged offenses occurred between Sept. 19 and Sept. 26, in Chittenden, Orleans and Caledonia counties. There were several victims across the state. Special Agent David Adams of the U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) has filed a complaint in U.S. District Court against Scott Jamie Ashness for scamming five branches of Community Bank, N.A and three branches of Passumpsic Bank. Ashness is now facing charges of bank fraud, forgery or false use of passport, fraud with identification documents and aggravated identity theft. The initial appearance in federal court of Ashness has not been scheduled yet.
