WATERFORD — The Select Board on Monday once again fielded complaints about nuisance all-terrain vehicles. Deborah Caldwell said a scofflaw ATV rider had illegally crossed five properties, including her own, in the area of Lawrence Road on the nights of Sept. 29 and Oct. 6. It disturbed residents and damaged the land, leaving tire ruts. Caldwell called for the town to crack down on lawbreakers and enforce its ATV ordinance, passed in 2020 that prohibits ATV travel on town-maintained roads. Select Board Chair Mike Barrett explained it was a matter of dollars and cents. The town lacks funds to contract with the Caledonia County Sheriff’s Office for adequate levels of ATV enforcement, he said. The Select Board aims to increase spending for police coverage in the 2024 budget to address growing concerns over ATV use, vehicular speeding, and boat launch vandalism. Currently, Waterford contracts with the Caledonia County Sheriff’s Office for minimal coverage at $5,500 annually.
