A woman from Hong Kong was indicted
A woman from Hong Kong was indicted on Thursday by a federal grand jury for reportedly trying to smuggle protected Eastern box turtles into Canada through Canaan, Vt. Wan Yee Ng, 41, is charged with attempting to export merchandise contrary to law, according to a report from the U.S. Attorney’s office. Authorities claim Ng was trying to get the turtles into Canada for the illegal global pet trade. Ng is a Chinese national living in Canada. She reportedly caught the attention of the United States Border Patrol at the Beecher Falls Station in Canaan after repeatedly renting the same Vermont residence on Lake Wallace, an international body of water that has been used for human and narcotic smuggling. The United States Border Patrol also discerned that Ng’s husband was renting a separate property on the lake in Canada at the same time.
