A Vermont Agency of Transportation crew was hard at work Monday

A Vermont Agency of Transportation crew was hard at work Monday morning trying to clear Route 2 in East St. Johnsbury of a mudslide that closed both roadway lanes Monday. Heavy equipment was busy scooping up mud and trees that came down in multiple mudslides off a sizeable bank eroded by runoff from a farm field high above the major east-west corridor. VTRANS had nearly cleared the roadway on  when the bank gave way a second time, and the road remained closed overnight. By late morning, one lane had been restored, and a little while later, both lanes reopened.  Route 2 was just one of several major Vermont routes shut down during Monday’s storms. Most of the others were caused by rising water and not damage to the roadway, as seen with the East St. Johnsbury mudslide.
