The Lancaster Transfer Station will cease
LANCASTER — The Lancaster Transfer Station will cease accepting low-grade and mixed paper on Nov. 30. Transfer Station supervisor Rusty Scott said the town lost $16,300 on mixed paper recycling last year. He recommended that his staff spend time on more profitable recycling streams. The Select Board on Nov. 4 gave him their blessing. Scott said the decision boiled down to a simple cost-benefit analysis. He said the labor costs to handle mixed paper were high because of sorting. Meanwhile, Scott said the revenue for mixed paper was low. As a result, Scott said. His staff can spend many hours preparing a bale of mixed paper, only to find no buyers.
