Saying it’s a decision that should remain with voters and would complicate matters for small communities if made law, one town is going on the record to oppose a House bill seeking to prohibit some municipal offices from being held by one person, such as town clerk and tax collector. After passing the New Hampshire House of Representatives in March, House Bill 1124, sponsored by state Rep. Walter Spilsbury, R-Charlestown, goes to a hearing on May 7 before the Senate Election Law and Municipal Affairs Committee. According to its analysis, the legislation seeks to “limit conflicts of interest and excessive concentration of power for municipal board and committee members.”
