Grafton County sheriff is declining to meet with the county commission
Citing two new bills signed into law, the Grafton County sheriff is declining to meet with the county commission regarding the commissioners’ concerns about the sheriff entering into an agreement with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Senate Bill 62 prohibits any county, municipality, or state government from impeding any county, local, or state law enforcement agency from entering into an agreement with ICE. The law enforcement part of the bill takes effect on July 21, and other parts on Jan. 1, 2026. House Bill 511, which takes effect Jan. 1, requires law enforcement agencies to comply with immigration detainers of inmates, if safe to do so, and prohibits state and local government entities from adopting sanctuary policies.
