Four American heroes were honored at a memorial event
GILMAN — Four American heroes, including a former Gilman parish minister, Reverend George L. Fox, who are reverently remembered as “the Four Chaplains,” were honored at a memorial event on Saturday. The courageous actions of the four men aboard the sinking S.S. Dorchester, an American troop transport that sunk over the Atlantic during World War II, cemented them a place in American history. On Saturday morning, friends and veterans gathered at the Reverend George L. Fox Memorial Chapel in Gilman for the remembrance event. Speakers, including Fox’s granddaughter, Lisa Harbiour, recounted the story of the Four Chaplains. The Dorchester was a civilian liner that was refitted for military transport purposes. On route to Greenland, it was torpedoed by a German submarine in the early hours of Feb. 3, 1943. Of the 902 people aboard, only 230 would survive.
