Drivers of large trucks better get some aspirin

LANCASTER — Drivers of large trucks better get some aspirin. The Mt. Orne Covered Bridge re-opened last week with “headache bars” to enforce its 12-foot-9 height limit and prevent damage caused by oversized vehicles that attempt to squeeze through the 112-year-old span. Within 24 hours, the headache bar claimed its first victim. According to town officials, an oversized vehicle crossed the bridge on Feb. 22 and struck the crash bar, knocking it to the ground. The vehicle fled the scene and was not identified, but officials believe it was traveling east from Lunenburg, Vt., into Lancaster. Meanwhile, the town highway department re-installed the headache bar.
