A car crash has toppled a historic fountain for the second time
LANCASTER — A car crash has toppled a historic fountain for the second time in less than two years. On Sunday, an out-of-state driver ran into the 130-year-old Benton Memorial Fountain at around 4:10 p.m.. According to Lancaster Police, 24-year-old Madison Smith of Providence, R.I., lost traction while traveling north on Route 3 and turned her 2018 Volvo into the sidewalk to avoid oncoming traffic, striking and knocking over the fountain. Slippery roads and winter weather were cited as contributing to the accident. No injuries were reported. A full structural assessment will be conducted in the coming days. The accident came 22 months after a similar one-car collision brought down the Kent Memorial Fountain, located a quarter mile down Main Street.
