A 3-year-old child was among four people who into Lake Memphremagog on Saturday

NEWPORT — A 3-year-old child was among four people who into Lake Memphremagog on Saturday when the side-by-side vehicle they were riding broke through the ice. The 3-year-old needed life-saving measures that started with a man beginning chest compressions as the boy was being pulled to shore on a sled. Newport City Police Chief Travis Bighman reported the other three people, which included another child, “all appeared to be in a state of exhaustion/hypothermia.” When police arrived, the chief said, “three people ran toward officers while pulling a black sled, in which a man was administering chest compressions to a 3-year-old child.” Newport Ambulance Service and Newport City Fire Department also responded to the scene, and when the child arrived at shore EMS personnel from the ambulance service took over aid of the child, who was taken to North Country Hospital. The other three people were driven to the hospital by bystanders via personal vehicles led by a police cruiser. Chief Bigham said the accident is being investigated.
