Local filmmaker and Catamount Arts founder Jay Craven clinched the 10th annual Herb Lockwood Prize, accompanied by a $10,000 cash award, in recognition of his unparalleled contributions to the Vermont arts. Best known for pioneering Catamount Arts and artistically directing the Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival, Craven has long stood as a beacon in Vermont’s cultural community. Todd Lockwood, who established the prize in 2014 as a tribute to his late brother Herb, a cherished artist and musician, lavished praise on Craven for his groundbreaking role in nurturing Vermont’s rustic performing arts scene. Craven sparked an arts movement with Catamount Arts, a unique film and performance hub founded in 1975. Jay’s singular vision and impact remain unrivaled. The annual accolade celebrates the zenith of artistic leadership in Vermont, spotlighting artists who consistently churn out commendable work and leave a lasting imprint on their communities. The selection process is managed by an anonymous group of 20, who ensure complete confidentiality.
