Death at Northwest State Correctional Facility: Investigation Underway

WATERBURY — The Vermont Department of Corrections announced on Monday the death of a detainee at Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans. Jeffery Nichols, 35, of Enosburg, was found unresponsive early Sunday morning in a cell in the booking area of NWSCF. Department and medical staff immediately began life-saving measures and called for emergency medical services. Life-saving efforts, including CPR and multiple administrations of Narcan, were unsuccessful. The Department is conducting internal administrative and medical reviews of this incident. The official cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner, but is not considered suspicious at this time, officials stated. Nichols was lodged on September 9 on charges of aggravated domestic assault and offense committed within the presence of a child. His criminal history dates back to 2005, officials noted.
