According to documents unsealed on Monday, the two-state fugitive arrested Oct. 24 in East Ryegate after allegedly opening fire on U.S. Marshals Service deputies bragged to a friend that he was only caught because he ran out of gas. Locally, police in New Hampshire said he had made previous comments to others about committing suicide by cop. After a hearing at Vermont federal court on Monday, Douglas Reynolds, 36, was held without bail on pre-trial detention after prosecutors successfully argued that he poses a danger to the community and is unlikely to appear in court. Making the case was Joshua Banker, assistant U.S. attorney for Vermont, who said Reynolds, after his arrest and while incarcerated, spoke of the events of Oct. 24 and other topics in recorded jailhouse phone calls.
