Members of the New Elementary School Team Committee cleared up
LITTLETON—As the town vote approaches in March, members of the New Elementary School Team Committee cleared up what they said are some misconceptions about the proposed new K-6 school. At a community meeting on Wednesday, committee and school board members reconfirmed their recommendation to go with a new 72,626-square-foot school versus renovating the existing 70-year-old Lakeway Elementary School along Union Street that has racked up dozens of life-safety and building code deficiencies through the decades. They also addressed skepticism by some residents who previously doubted renovation cost more than a new build. After enlisting two independent consultants, the district has concluded that renovating the existing building to meet today’s requirements would cost $39 million, compared to $36 million for building a new one.
